Critical Reading and Writing in the Discipline (FOUN1019) is a yearlong course designed to improve and develop students’ cognitive, analytical and rhetorical skills. It thereby provides students with the requisite skills to truly join the scholarly arena and become academic writers. I enrolled in the FOUN1019 course with the assumption that I would become more proficient in English Language and a more eloquent communicator. I anticipated that the course would be challenging like many other courses ascribed to my first degree in Marketing; however, nothing could have truly prepared me for the arduous work load that it entails. I had to work assiduously throughout the duration of FOUN109 to prepare coursework and conduct research that required great efforts from me on a weekly basis. Nonetheless FOUN1019 has given me a platform to improve my critical thinking, enhance my research skills and exercise better time management skills. I found that after I enrolled in FOUN1019 my abil ity to think critically improved tremendously. I learnt that critical thinking is a process of analyzing and evaluating information objectively; in order to fully grasp the message being conveyed. Hence, I was constantly encouraged to not only read, but to question and interact with various texts: reducing them to mere fragments and assessing how each aspect of the text contributed to its entirety. Cleopatra VII was a remarkably intelligent woman with great charisma and political astuteness. The ancient historian, Plutarch, stated that â€Å"to know her was to be touched with an irresistible charm. Her delightful manner of speaking was such as to win the heart. While a reversal of roles occurred with Marc Antony, she had the upper hand and he eventually became fiscally and emotionally dependent on her. In addition, he was easily manipulated, thus Cleopatra frequently got her way. Overall, the territorial gain and the power she had over him proved that Cleopatra’s relationship with Marc Antony was more politically beneficial than with Julius Caesar. Firstly, Cleopatra’s submissiveness and political dependency on Julius Caesar proved to be less beneficial in contrast to her relationship Marc Antony. In 48BC, she was a young 22 year old trying to regain her Ptolemaic throne from her brother, she knew he was the most powerful in the world and understood that that the Roman Consul was the only one who could aid her. Caesar managed to initially appease Cleopatra’s desire for power by reading her father’s will and forcing her brother, Ptolemy XIII, and herself to rule together. Later he gained managed to gain more power for her by commanding her to â€Å"marry† her younger brother, Ptolemy XIV, for she would hold all of the power due to his age. This pretense was set up in order to make her complacent but still remained a superior force with his diplomatic choice.
